EnerSys Awarded $7 Million Contract For Military Tactical Vehicle Battery

READING, Pa., Aug. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- EnerSys (NYSE: ENS), the world's largest manufacturer, marketer and distributor of industrial batteries, has recently been awarded a contract by the US Department of Defense (DoD) worth $7 million for its Armasafe Plus(R) advanced military tactical vehicle battery.

Armasafe Plus batteries, which incorporate EnerSys' proprietary thin plate pure lead (TPPL) technology, will be supplied to the DoD over the next 12 months. This award represents the second-year option of a five-year contract awarded to EnerSys in 2004 by the Defense Logistics Agency's (DLA) supply center in Richmond, VA, the Defense Supply Center Richmond (DSCR).

The batteries have delivered superior performance in battlefield situations in Iraq for the Stryker brigade and the Marine Corps, as well as in rigorous testing at military laboratories and on army bases in the US, such as Fort Hood. Armasafe Plus batteries have been in use by the UK military for several years and were recently qualified by the German army, resulting in a contract. EnerSys currently provides batteries to defense markets around the world for tactical vehicles on the ground, aircraft in the air and ships and submarines in the sea.

Sanjay Deshpande, EnerSys Vice President of Aerospace and Defense, remarked, "Our continued success in these demanding applications in the defense sector strengthens EnerSys' capability to provide rugged and reliable batteries to both our military customers around the world and our non-military customers in the Reserve Power and Motive Power markets."

Armasafe Plus batteries are manufactured in EnerSys' highly automated facility in Warrensburg, MO on a production line that was inaugurated by Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO) in March 2004.
